The Royal Lyceum Theatre
Built in 1883, the Royal Lyceum Theatre is a graceful Victorian building in the Scottish city of Edinburgh. The theatre has enjoyed many successes over the many years that it has been in operation, and it has seen performances by legendary greats such as Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. Though it was initially opened and run by J.B. Howard and F.W.P. Wyndham it changed hands a number of times before 1965, when it was taken over by the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company which has been running the theatre ever since. In the more than 120 years that the theatre has been open, it has not only been able to remain a theatre, but has gained a strong reputation for excellence. This reputation has certainly not changed as the theatre entered the twenty-first century with new ideas and ambitions.
Located on Grindlay Street in Edinburgh, the Royal Lyceum Theatre has the distinction of being the home of Edinburgh’s busiest theatre company. The Royal Lyceum Theatre Company produces thrillers, comedies, tragedies, dramas and Christmas shows throughout the course of the year. Often several productions are in various stages of planning whilst at least one is being rehearsed during the course of one of the theatres shows. This enables the theatre to keep staging productions at a continuous rate and means that the theatre always has something on offer. The theatre is busiest between September and May each year when they offer high-quality drama productions to theatergoers. The highlight of the season is probably the children’s Christmas show is very much family-focused.
The Royal Lyceum Theatre Company is a brilliant learning tool that strives to inspire and educate the youth of Scotland. Besides touring, they regularly hold programs wherein youngsters can participate and learn more about the various forms of theatre.
