A partnership was formed between Dundee Contemporary Arts Ltd., the Dundee City Council and the University of Dundee to form the DCA center. The concept of Dundee’s very own contemporary arts center was born in the 1980s. At first the Contemporary arts were displayed in a Seagate warehouse, with some exhibitions at the McManus Galleries. In 1994 the Dundee District Council published an arts strategy to establish a new center devoted to contemporary visual arts. After debates and discussions the Council bought a property in 1995, an old coal warehouse. Richard Murphy Architects began working on the project in 1997. Thus stands the Dundee Contemporary Arts today. Each of the 3 partners who developed the center has brought their own perspective to the project with focus being placed on entertainment, education, research and other factors. The center has proved itself a boon to those involved, adding to Dundee tourist’s experience and benefiting local residents. Visitors will find the dynamic space of the center a marvelous blend of art and people.
