Alyth Golf Course – Tranquil Surroundings, Sharp Game

Alyth Golf Course comes with an awe inspiring pedigree of creators – reason enough to want to play here. Established in 1894, this 6,259 yard par 70 parkland/heathland layout was originally a nine-hole course that had been designed by the old master of the game, Old Tom Morris. The final extensions were completed in 1934 under the supervision of that other legend, James Braid. There have been modifications since Braid’s times, but despite the heather and gorse, the course does bear his stamp.

The course is located in Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland, and sixteen miles north of Dundee. There are several other well known golf courses near by to make up an exciting package for a /blog/planning-a-golf-vacation-in-scotland-is-simple
golf vacation. Surrounded by forests of pines and silver birch and with rolling hills as a background, the beautiful, tranquil setting of Alyth can lull you into complacency. Beware – the course here demands concentration and constant attention. Though there are large greens and wide fairways, the trees and gorse on both sides and diverse rolling course calls for a certain precision while playing.

The layout is such that you rarely come across other groups while playing and it is so easy to immerse oneself here in the pleasures of a good game. However, Alyth offers a challenge to players, irrespective of their handicap. The most challenging hole perhaps is the par 4, fifth hole, a dog leg right hole. From tee to green it is out of bounds on the right and to the left is lost ball territory. The fairway is crossed by two ditches, one running diagonally and the other at right angles to the fairway. The green is on a plateau with a front to back slope and subtle burrows. Not a mere walk in the park!

The next five holes also have out of bounds to the right so take care not to slice waywardly! Alyth Golf Club has a recently renovated club house that overlooks the 18th hole. Visitors’ locker room and friendly bar and restaurant await you here. The dress code on the course and the club is casual but denims, football T-shirts and vest style T-shirts are not permitted.
