Glasgow Central Railway Station
Caledonian Railway first opened the historic Glasgow Central Railway Station in 1879. Then, between 1901 and 1906, Glasgow Central went through an extension process. The concourse and booking hall were finished in 1882 and a year later, in 1883, the Glasgow Central Station Hotel was opened. The Glasgow Railway Station's entrance has beautiful, ornate ironwork and seven pillars holding up the glazed porte-cochere arcade.
Glasgow Central has been the recipient of the National Rail Awards Major Station of the Year in 1999 and 2005, and won the 2004 Principal Station during the National Railway Heritage Awards 25th Anniversary. The Glasgow Central Railway Station provides passengers with many services and tries to accommodate passengers with a variety of disabilities.
Any passengers requiring assistance with their luggage should arrange prior to arrival for someone to help or you can get assistance at the station reception, which is on first floor. The Glasgow Central Railway Station has two unisex toilets located on the lower floor of the station. You can get tickets at the ticket office for any Scottish destinations but you will have to purchase tickets from the travel center if you are going somewhere else. There are payphones at the entrance of platform 1 and platform 9.
There are three train companies operating at Glasgow Central: First Scotrail, GNER and Virgin Trains. From the Glasgow Central Railway Station you can catch a taxi at the taxi rank in Gordon Street. There is a bus service located on Gordon Street and there is short-term and long-stay parking available at the station. Glasgow Central provides passengers with the best protection by having police present at the station twenty-four hours a day.
