Troon

The harbor town of Troon in South Ayrshire is probably best known as a golfing destination. Boasting some six golf courses, Royal Troon is the most highly regarded course in Troon. The Royal Troon Golf Club as established in the town in 1878, with just 5 holes. In 1886, the course was expanded to 18 holes, and in 1923 the first Open Championship was hosted here. Since then, the Royal Troon Golf Club hosts the Open Championship every seven years or so.

Troon itself started off as an insignificant fishing hamlet. The harbor was built in 1808 resulting in the town’s expansion. Today it is a popular holiday resort. Aside from the golf courses in Troon, people are attracted to the stunning beaches of North Sands and South Sands, as well as the impressive marina, which provides yachts with access to the Firth of Clyde. With beautiful views of the island of Arran, Troon is a true delight for leisure travelers.
