Balquhidder – Home of Legends
If you’ve ever been inspired by the heroic tale of Rob Roy, then you will probably want to make a detour in Balquhidder during your next trip to Scotland. This scenic little village is situated near the head of Loch Voil on the edge of Balquhidder Glen. Not only is the village a great place to explore, but it is home to the grave in which the legendary Rob Roy McGregor was laid to rest sometime after his heroic death in 1734. He is joined in eternal slumber by his loving wife and two children and the ancient tombstones that mark their gravesite are frequently visited by those interested in his story.
The small village of Balquhidder is located in the Stirling council area of Scotland. It enjoys a dramatic backdrop that is created by the mountainous Braes of Balquhidder and it is also regarded as a good fishing spot because of its proximity to several fine fishing spots. The majority of visitors will start their journey to Balquhidder in Scotland by stopping at the MacGregor Murry Mausoleum before heading into the village and exploring the remaining the somewhat rustic Balquhidder Kirkyard. Here you will find but the Balquhidder Church as well as the ruins of the Old Church which have not been in use for quite some time. Near these ruins is where you will find the grave of Rob Roy MacGregor marked with his motto: “MacGregor Despite Them”. Other relics from the past include the Balquhidder Station and the Kingshouse Hotel which is still very much in use and a great place to stay. There are a number of roads which wind through the surrounding countryside and enable you to take a peaceful country drive while the people who live in the village itself are friendly and lively.
