Explore the beauty of Pitlochry
Pitlochry started life as a tiny settlement and has gradually grown over the years into an attractive, busy town. Situated on the River Tummel, it is a solid town with a strong Victorian air and a multitude of stone buildings. Pitlochry may look like a page from a history book but it certainly is not dull. It is a thoroughly modern city, keeping up with the rest of the world in every way that matters.
To many, Pitlochry is one of the leading mountain resorts in Scotland. One of its best features is that of the scenic mountains which surround it. They may not be as high as some of Scotland’s other mountains, but they are beautiful and are great for climbing. Ben Vrackie stands at 2759ft and has a stunning view. It is usually climbed from Moulin, an outlier in the north east of Pitlochry. Beyond this stunning mountain lies the Cairngorm massif, one of Scotland’s largest and remotest mountain ranges.
If you are not all that interested in climbing these majestic beauties, there are a lot of other things with which you can occupy your time when visiting Pitlochry. Shopping is one of them. Besides the usual Scottish bric-a-brac, you will be able to find a wide range of up-market outlets and other great shops selling a variety of goods. There is also the Pitlochry Festival Theatre which boasts as many as eight different plays each week. The theatre is situated across the River Tummel and is accessible via pedestrian suspension bridge. Not too far away in the southern end of the town is the Blair Atholl Distillery, one of the country’s oldest. The Edradour distillery lies on a hillside to the east of town and has the distinction of being Scotland’s smallest. The Moulin Inn has a working brewery and is also worth a visit.
If you are a nature lover you will surely enjoy a visit to the Pitlochry dam. The dam was built across the River Tummel to create Lock Faskally but it is the ‘fish ladder’ which makes it so special. Visitors can see the fish making their way up the fish ladder through glass walls. The Scottish Hydro Electric Visitor Center is a treat for those who take an interest in Science. Clearly there is no shortage of activities for visitors to enjoy when they come to the beautiful mountain resort town of Pitlochry.
