New Food and Drink Trail for Scottish Borders

Foodies visiting the spectacular Scottish Borders can now enjoy the recently launched Scottish Lowlands Food and Drink Trail dedicated to promoting local produce in the Borders, East Lothian, the Clyde Valley and Fife. Created by Farm Stay, the trail includes more than fifty of the organisation’s members, offering (as the name suggests) the opportunity for visitors to stay on a working farm. The launch of the new trail took place at the Buccleuch Arms Hotel in St Boswells, Roxburghshire, on September 16 with a mint-condition 1912 Model T Ford reminding visitors of a time when life moved at a slower pace and people took time to enjoy the simple things, including farm-fresh food.

Referred to as the ‘Gateway to Scotland’, the Scottish Borders has so much to offer that visitors will be spoiled for choice. History buffs will be fascinated by the monuments, castles and great houses just waiting to be explored. Photographers, artists and writers will soon understand why so many artistic and literary geniuses, including Sir Walter Scott, have been inspired by the landscapes of the Scottish Borders. Local towns reflect a gentler way of life than most city-dwellers are accustomed to, offering a welcome break from the rat-race.

Outdoor enthusiasts can test their limits on the world-class 7stanes mountain biking trails, go hiking on the footpaths of St Cuthbert’s Way, Borders Abbey Way and Tweed Valley Forest Park, or do some fishing on the River Tweed or local lochs. Golfers can enjoy the experience of playing their favourite game on any of up to twenty golf courses in the area. Rail routes, well-maintained roads, and walking and cycling routes make it a pleasure to explore the Scottish Borders.

With 2013 being designated as the Year of Natural Scotland, the new Scottish Lowlands Food and Drink Trail fits in very well, and will also be in place for 2014 which promises to be a very busy time for tourism as Scotland welcomes visitors for the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup and Homecoming Scotland.
