  • Greetings from Texas

Hello from the Lone Star State. I started checking this site out a couple of weeks ago, it looks like some interesting people post here. I'm considering visiting Edinburgh for an extended period. If anyone has info on employment prospects in Silicon Glen, I would be interested. Oh, I almost forget, I do solemnly swear never to use "Y'all" here!

Ok, Thanks Mis... D.F., I currently do onsite repair of PC's and servers, I have some networking skills, including some Cisco... My degree is in industrial electronics, so I'm interested in computer/electronics manufacturing, leaning towards R & D.

The electronics sector has been having a hard time lately but there seems to be some recovery going on, but it's not at the level it was. On the other hand the IT side is doing well.
Try http://www.s1jobs.com or a company called Technology Project Services (don't know the URL), their based just outside Edinburgh and specialise in placing technical people in short to long term contracts.

            Hello Archangel
The problem with coming to the UK is that working visas are difficult to obtain unless you have dual nationality or are a citizen of another state within the EU..., OR if you have marketable skills for which we have a shortfall - I'm not sure, but Computer Science skills were taken off the list of 'required' skills about 3 years ago, as I can vouch personally, the British Unis are churning out loads of our own graduates - although engineering numbers have dropped and you may be able to get a working visa based on those skills.... Top of the 'required' skills are teaching and medicine.

Have a look at the Home Office site - they control all immigration/work permits etc for the whole of the UK.
            http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/con...d/en/home.html

Good luck and hope you find you are in one of the above groups!

                International Lady/Naturalized Texan

G'day from Kay: I wish you luck in reaching your employment goals. I've recently had to jump thru some hoops to get the job I now have & I'm looking forward to months of 12hour days (7 days per week). However, I get about 1 week every few months & a free plane ticket. I plan on using one of my vacations to visit Scotland & I hope to "get acquainted" with some folks in Scotland before I go. It seems that most of the posters here are ladies & I would like to get to know some middle-aged, unmarried men to hang out with. Oh well. We'll see what happens, eh? Good luck to ya. Kay
