  • Robert Burns - a hypocrite? - surely not!

Check out this contrary view of Scotland`s national bard.

Robert Burns: Socialist hero or just a Scottish social climber? - This Britain, UK - Independent.co.uk

"We should salute the reckless courage of Gerard Carruthers, lecturer in Scottish literature at Glasgow, who argues that Robbie Burns is not quite the pure socialist some of us might like him to be.
"Robert Burns did not crop up much during last year`s celebration to commemorate campaigners such as William Wilberforce, who struggled to bring about the abolition of the slave trade."

No. On the contrary, the hypocrite made plans to emigrate to Jamaica - a slave colony!

        Please explain, or shut up!

Did Robert Burns , our dodgy national bard, plan to emigrate to make his fortune, in Jamaica - a slave colony - or not?

        Put up, or shut up.

Surely Burns's taking the oath as an Exciseman - a post of significantly Anglo-influenced patronage, is enough to demonstrate where his sympathies lay?

Fact is that he didn't though.

I don't know about being a hypocrite but the fact is he wrote some beautiful poetry. My personal favourite is A Man's a Man for A' That.

I found a beautiful rendition of it on YouTube, an clip from a TV show presented by Melvyn Bragg.

Famous Scots reciting a beutiful Scottish poem. What more could a man want?

Fact is that he was broke, desperate and desolate at the time he planned this, so much so that he died in his home following a dental extraction with no one around him to help because he had alienated everyone due to his views and opinions.

You are not presenting some unknown fact about Burns. It is well known the condition of his mind and body at the time of his death and you are also applying moral standards and opinions on a time period completely different to today.

You appear to have some kind of agenda here against Robert Burns though.

Good to know, my suspicions was that he, like many other close minded bigots, perceive Burns to be closely associated with freemasonary and/or protestantism given his location and therefore feel the need to discredit the man and his genius.

He was one of the most radical free thinkers in our history.
