    This is probably a daft question, but does the word gale force, as in 'auffy blowy oot there' have any connection with the word Gael?

    Ahm jist thinkin ther', ah cin see whaur yer comin fae. Ah wis haein a wee swatch it the wethir last nicht an the wee wummin sais its gaunnae brighten up aw ower i country an thit thir'll bi gaels in the North West.

      Hmm - My dictionary gets no further than "16th century, of unknown origin", so I suppose I am also going to wonder that now! Well, that's something to worry about for today. My guess would be that a Germanic or Norse origin might be more likely, but it is only a guess. It would be interesting to know.
