  • Scots words - how to say them?

    hi

i was wondering if someone could help me with the pronunciation of the following words in Scots

    maun
    wha
    whase
    whaur

do you say them with a long 'o' or a short 'a,' so
    mon, who, whoz, whor?

awa - is there an 'a' or 'o' at the end of this word.

    Hi Wojtek,
Try the website for the Glesga Speiker's Curn. They are a group of people in Glasgow that are interested in promoting the Scots language. You can listen to them speaking Scots and email them with your question. I'm sure they will help you if they can. The address is http://www.btinternet.com/~lcwilson/colin.htm
    Aw the best,
    Gwen

      Wojtek,
Pronunciation differs throughout Scotland but maun, whaur and whase are usually pronounced mon, whor and whoz although maun is not a word which is frequently used in modern Scots. Most Scots would pronounce wha with a short 'a' although it can also be pronounced who(o as in orange). As for awa either pronunciation-awa or awo can be used.
