Frenchland 16th Century Tower [03:02]
Frenchland Tower was originally a 16th century stone rectangular tower house, founded by the French family. Of three storeys and a garret, in the 17th century a substantial L-plan wing was added, which contained a scale-and-plait staircase rising from ground to first-floor levels, with additional accommodation on the floors above. The family held land here as tenants of the Bruces, from the early 13th century but sadly only the gables now stand to their full height, with part of the original wheel-stair in one corner. Around the tower there are traces of an enclosure and to the south-east, what may be an outbuilding. Half a mile north-west is Auldton Mote and 2 miles south-west is Lochhouse Tower.
