UM! Whisky Tour #75: Springbank (Part 3 of 3) [07:47]
Back at base camp after a splendid tour at the distillery, Gogsie settles in on the rocks at Carradale Bay for an honest tasting of the Springbank 100 Proof. A most noble and esteemed spirit which slips down voluminously about the thrapple. A most splendid evening. Next time, Gogsie checks out the resurrected Glengyle distillery a few paces down the road from Springbank, until then it's uisge mhtah!

UM! Whisky Tour #74: Springbank (Part 2 of 3) [13:43]
The second part in my Springbank Extrava-dram-za covers the remainder of the tour from the washbacks, through the stillroom (with the best guided description of the running of a spirit safe I've heard to date) and into the warehouse. This was all too good to edit down, so I've pretty much left it to run through these two parts... In the final part of the Springbank Uisge Mhath, I'll have a right good taste of the 100 Proof cask strength bottling... Nice!

UM! Whisky Tour #73: Springbank (Part 1 of 3) [13:00]
Gogsies Campbeltown Extrava'dram'za begins here. Campbeltown once boasted around 30 distilleries back in the first whiskey boom in the latter half of the 19th Century. But then two major disasters struck the industry; 1) the emergence of American prohibition (the only major export at the time) and 2) legendary tea-total PM David Lloyd George introduced a ridiculous tax on barley designed to stamp out alcohol abuse across the country. One by one the Campbeltown distilling dynasty collapsed with only two distilleries surviving to this day... the town is littered with remnants of its great heyday but more of that in a later episode. The next three episodes focus upon Springbank, thanks duly to a truly awesome tour that I felt needed to be uploaded in full...

UM! Whisky Tour #71: Laphroaig [10:01]
It's pronounced 'la-froyg' not 'la-frayg', and anyone that tells you otherwise needs dragged through the streets to the distillery and drowned in the pot ale tanks. Laphroaig is a Scottish distillery, not Irish, and Islay is a Scottish island, not Irish... so let's keep it that way, thank you. The trip to Laphroaig had both Gogsie and big bro on a slightly shaky keel due to consumption of several fine Islay ales at the Port Charlotte Hotel the night before, which were 'put away' with the appropriate Ileach bravado. Nice. Disaster, and a nice wee dram follows back at the tent...

UM! Whisky Tour #66: Lagavulin [05:46]
Lagavulin takes out the fire but leaves in the warmth... and how splendidly it does so... for a heavily peated whisky Lagavulin seems rather smooth in comparison to some of it's neighbours. Founded around 1815, Lagavulin was built by Peter Mackie along the road from Laphroaig and was intended to be an exact replica of it's older sister distillery (Mackie had fallen foul of his partners at Laphroaig and wanted to take them on in the marketplace...). Originally regsitered under the name 'Malt Mill', the distillery became Lagavulin when the stills were shifted into a bigger premises built alongside the old stillhouse which had been converted from an old farm building with the stills made to fit the space... the lyne arms of the stills came at an angle with the roof of the old building, a design borne of necessity yet adding to the character and also undoubtedly to the originality of the spirit. The old stillhouse is now the reception area... No filing inside Lagavulin regrettably... another Diageo solemnity... but another great distillery embraced ;) Next up, a pilgrimage to old Port Ellen...RIP
