We parked at Poolewe village round the head of Loch Ewe for this walk into the greatest wilderness remaining in Scotland in order to see the mountains of the Fisherfield Forest where ancient Lewisian gneiss rises to the summits of the some of the peaks in this remote, bleak and sterile part of the country. [June 2007] Last Great Wilderness - By road to the Castle thats graced a billion shortbread tins then onto Shieldaig with its Spanish Armada canon then finally Poolewe, one of the guardians of the very few entrances to the Last Great Wilderness in Scotland. Collectively the Fisherfield and Letterewe Forests contains the six remotest Munros in what is a road-free uninhabited mountainous area of Scotland. Overcast conditions combined with sleet and hailstones ensured this first trip we'd planned 'winter-long' [soundtrack NY] simply developed into a recce of the route there, in order to establish what facilities where available providing we got across the causeway and reached the barn at Carnmore just beyond the Hunting Lodge.
