Obviously, Scotland does not meet these criteria. While I wanted some transition from Africa into Asia, I never imagined it'd be in the UK. But Laura had been before, and really wanted to go back. So, Edinburgh it was, and I liked it more than I thought I would. It's like LondonLite --- much smaller and more laid back, but with similar architecture, culture, and refinement. It doesn't have the same glamour or buzz, but I'd venture that it's more livable. A not so short rundown on what we did: The first day we did the obvious: tour Edinburgh Castle. What a great idea! Put a castle smack dab in the middle of the city. Every city should really do this. Apart from being a nice centerpiece, it's impossible to get lost because you can always look up and get your bearings. Yeah, so it's pretty neat and castle-y, and you can see where Mary Queen of Scots hung out. But, I'm still glad I was born in the late 20th century, because, as cool as castles are, they didn't have running water or flush toilets, and it was probably pretty drafty. Pour bien commencer, je vais d'abord vous décrire pourquoi ce voyage. La RSPB, association de protection de la nature, est specialisée dans la conservation de l'avifaune (les piafs...:-) et gère de nombreuses réserves en Angleterre, Ecosse, Pays de galles et Irlande du Nord, sous couvert du Scottish National Trust. Parmis ces réserves, l'île d'Islay possède une situation particulière : c'est le seul pays (et en particulier cette île) d'Europe où une espèce, le Râle des genêts, est en population croissante (80 couples en moyenne actuellement, 1145 mâles chanteurs en Ecosse). La France ayant stabilisé une chute vertigineuse de l'espèce en 2007 avec 620 à 690 mâles chanteurs estimés sur toute la France !!! Mon séjour avait donc plusieurs objectifs : connaître les travaux de la RSPB, participer aux actions de protection du Râle des genêts, faire du Birdwatching et, bien sûr, découvrir les gens de l'île et prendre du bon temps (l'île est aussi réputée pour son whisky concidéré comme l'un des meilleur d'Ecosse grace à la tourbe particulière de l'île !). Ce serait en effet un sacrilège que ne pas mettre les pieds dans un pub et étendre sa culture vinicole à celle-ci. Je vous ferais grâce des espèces ...
