The current parish church at Lunan was built in 1844 on the site of, or very close to, a medieval predecessor mentioned in around 1200 and dedicated in 1242. The current church is a small Romanesque-style structure with sandstone ashlar walls and slate roofs. It is surrounded by a long, narrow graveyard and the site is positioned on a valley side in a rural setting.

In the Middle Ages the land was the site of a major Augustinian abbey, Scone Abbey, nothing of which now remains above ground level except detached architectural fragments. This was the crowning place of the Kings of the Scots, on the Stone of Destiny, down to Alexander III. The grounds of the palace were the first place of introduction to Britain of the Douglas-fir tree species, after being introduced by David Douglas.
