West Highland Way 2010 - Kinlochleven Part 1. [03:09]
The West Highland Way arrives at Kinlochleven beneath the Mamores: this is a walk around the Highland village upon arrival. This short stroll provides fantastic views of 'the Maidens' the 1055m Munro Na Gruagaichean, one of the many mountains that tower above the village. Of course, the only fitting way to end the West Highland Way is to follow the exciting official high-level route from the village over the Mamores to Mullach nan Coirean en route to 'Old Bill', 'The Fort' or to give it its Sunday name - Fort William, although the town in 1834 was dubbed Duncansburgh, before which it was called Gordonsburgh and before that Maryburgh, even though its old name was actually Inverlochy! The Mamores are a group of mountains in the Lochaber area of the Grampian Mountains in the Scottish Highlands. They form an east-west ridge approximately fifteen kilometres in length lying between Glen Nevis to the north and Loch Leven to the south and can be accessed from Kinlochleven on the Way. Long before the arrival of the Aluminum Smelter in 1907, Kinlochleven existed as two small hamlets called Kinlochmore and Kinlochbeag. Kind Edward V11 stayed at Mamore Lodge [that can be accessed by a short detour off the Way - see Part 2 of this vid] on Kinlochmore Estate while shooting in the area. Later the woodlands above Kinlochleven were chosen as a suitable site for a POW camp during World War 1.
