5043 hauling 'Castle to Scotland' 28-05-2012 [03:51]
After the sunshine and gales of the weekend, the wind finally dropped in time for the return leg of Vintage Trains' 'Castle to Scotland' from Edinburgh to Tyseley which utilised no less than 3 locomotives-5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe', 37516 as a pilot loco behind the Earl and 47760 on the rear of the train. We first see the train coasting through Oxenholme running 7 minutes early, before the water stop at Carnforth. Here, 47760 was removed from the train leaving 5043 & 37516 to haul the train back to Tyseley. The final location is Leyland, where arguably the 2 greatest sounds on rail are expreienced in just one shot. The train is first seen moving slowly between red signals behind the procession of class 156's, both of which called at Leyland only a couple of minutes before and had also been stopped at signals. As the section beyond Leyland to Euxton Junction finally clears, 5043 slowly begins to accelerate, then when 2 sections become clear, 37516 steals the show by opening up into full thrash mode just before entering the station to make it up the bank to Euxton Junction.
