BARNES LONGHORN AND SCOTTISH CATTLE [02:10]
Barnes and Longhorn cattle of Doniphan county Ks. Longhorns are a diverse breed of cattle that started as feral Mexican cattle that were bred with eastern cattle back in the early days along the Tex/Mex border.By the late 20's they were almost wiped out and only saved as a curiosity due to their horns that can range up to 80 inches from tip to tip. They come in a wide range of colors and this gentle and intelligent animal is now bought and sold for as much as$40000 to $170000 each. They have a wide color range and can thrive on a very marginal pasture. The Highland are a hardy small beef cattle with horns and a wavy coat that protects them from the harsh climate of Scotland and Whales. They eat a diverse group of plants other cattle don't eat.Their meat is lean. It is unusual to see either of these in large cattle herds and fun to ride up and see something beside Angus, Herford and black white face cattle as I travel the Kansas Roadways.
