My year of walking. 2012. © [04:44]
2012 was the year of my first distance trails. In June I completed Hadrian's wall from Wallsend to Bowness on Solway for the MS Society and in August I did the Dales Way from Ilkley to Bowness on Windermere for the British Lung Foundation. I also had walking weekends in Rothbury, Craster, Budle Bay, Wooler, Berwick on Tweed and Coniston in Cumbria. It was a year of firsts in which I also I completed my first three Wainwrights and bought my first tent which will change the way I approach walking. Wherever you go stay safe, check the weather, plan ahead, let people know where you are going, take maps & compass with your gps and follow the countryside code. It is best to ask permission to camp outside of official campsites although the law for campers is different in Scotland and England. Music: Mendelssohn. A Midsummer Night's Dream, Op. 61 Scherzo. Bertrand Chamayou.
Woods and Forests © [02:47]
Woods and Forests from various walks in the north of England and the Scottish borders over the last three or four years. I had to look this up but apparently the difference between a wood and a forest is to do with the density, a forest is denser than a wood. Wherever you go stay safe, check the weather, plan ahead, let people know where you are going, take maps & compass with your gps and follow the countryside code. It is best to ask permission to camp outside of official campsites although the law for campers is different in Scotland and England. Music: Enchanted Forest. 89Ford
Coast © [03:56]
Images from various coastal walks mainly in the north of England and southern Scotland. When walking on the coast you need to remain aware of tide times in order to avoid becoming cut off. Wherever you go stay safe, check the weather, plan ahead, let people know where you are going, take maps & compass with your gps and follow the countryside code. It is best to ask permission to camp outside of official campsites although the law for campers is different in Scotland and England. Music: Grieg. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1: Morning Mood
Paxton to Berwick upon Tweed linear walk. © [03:22]
A 10 mile linear river walk which meanders around the river Whiteadder before heading westwards along the Tweed past the bottom of the Paxton House estate as far as the Chain Bridge. Here the route turns eastwards along the bank of the river Tweed for a further 6 miles into Berwick over the old Bridge. Warning some of these riverside paths would be dangerous when the river is in flood and the banks can become slippery at times. Wherever you go stay safe, check the weather, plan ahead, let people know where you are going, take maps & compass with your gps and follow the countryside code. It is best to ask permission to camp outside of official campsites although the law for campers is different in Scotland and England. Music: Lament of the Glen. Mike Stobbie
Tweed & Till walk, Northumberland. © [01:15]
This circular walk starts by Twizel bridge on the Berwick to Cornhill Road and follows the River Till under the railway bridge to the confluence with the River Tweed. It then follows the Tweed eastwards before cutting across the field to head up a bank where it meets a country road. Here you go straight ahead along the road, past some cottages on the right until the road bears left. After a short distance you reach a stile on the right. Cross the stile and head diagonally across the field past Twizel Castle on the right until you reach a stile in the bottom right corner of the field. This takes you onto a track which heads back down hill with the river below to reach your starting point. This walk is approximately 4.5 miles long and is graded easy. For reference I got this walk from Walks in the Secret Kingdom by Edward Baker which is no longer in print. Wherever you go stay safe, plan ahead, let people know where you are going, take maps & compass with your gps and follow the country code. It is best to ask permission to camp outside of official campsites although the law for campers is different in Scotland and England. Music : Benny Hawes. Drift
