The Duchess and The Earl - 26.5.12 [05:42]
Not a lost episode of Downton Abbey but two of the best mainline performers of recent years in action over Shap on a very warm but blustery day. Firstly, no.46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' with PMR Tours 'Citadel Express' from Lincoln, with 46233 coming on at Crewe. The train is seen at Bay Horse, wrong location chosen as the train is slowing for a 50mph slack but it was too late to go elsewhere. The train is then seen at Greenholme and Scout Green. My efforts at recording the return journey have been consigned to the cutting room floor. 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' is seen at Shap Wells with Vintage Trains three day excursion to Scotland from Tyseley. The diesel was attached at Carnforth to give assistance over Beattock due to fire risk but was placed behind 5043 at Carlisle to the no doubt delight of the tour passengers who had been less than thrilled with the timings issued by Network Rail for this train. The Earl unfortunately set off a number of lineside fires on Shap. Thanks to Steve Thompson for updates through the day.

'Castle to Scotland' & 'The Citadel Express' 26-05-2012 [03:49]
A glorious day with 100% sunshine all across the Country was in store for passengers on board the 2 steam hauled railtours to run down the WCML on Saturday 26th May 2012. However, the Sunshine came at a price; A harsh North Easterly/Easterly wind gusting up to 30mph at times played havoc with the microphone on the camera, meaning much of the footage was unusable, but some could be salvaged, which is shown here. We begin just south of Grayrigg, where 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' heads up towards the summit at the head of PMR Tours' 'Citadel Express', not as fast as expected due to Network Rail cautioning all steam hauled services due to a fire risk. A couple of hours later, after a failed shot of the Statesman, 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' storms up Shap at Greenholme with day 1 of Vintage Trains' 'Castle to Scotland' running around 25 minutes late and with 47760 on the rear doing most of the work. 2 and a half hours, a failed freight south of Carlisle and some bad decisions by signallers later, 46233 returns running nearly 2 hours behind schedule, seen passing Dillicar Common in the Lune Gorge. Because of the lateness of the train, the final shot at Bee Lane (Preston) was aborted. Thanks to the gentleman in the Lune Gorge for updates on The Citadel Express.
