Scotland - Culloden Battlefield [03:29]
We were heading back from our three-day Timberbush Tours trip to the Highlands and Skye. Angela, our driver/guide, suggested stopping at Culloden. Since none of us had ever been there before, we all jumped at the chance. We arrived late in the day with just enough time to watch the amazing 360 degree filmed re-enactment of the battle, check out a few of the museum exhibits and walk the battlefield itself. When I got to the memorial cairn I realized it was actually the anniversary of the battle.

Scotland, May 2010 tour [25:13]
This video has been a long time in coming. I am the laziest updater ever. Before I even knew I was graduating (and why would I not? scoffed I... slightly doubtfully), I decided to go on a self-congratulating solo trip to Scotland. Why Scotland, you ask? Why not the Caribbean, or Jamaica, or Hawaii, like everyone else? Scotland is such a BORING country, you might say. Well, I'd had a fascination for all things Celtic for a long time. History, mythology, battle grounds, you name it, I'd touched upon it and wanted more. Plus, I didn't want to trod the well-travelled path. So, my decision was made, and I said goodbye to Montreal and hello to Glasgow and the rest of Scotland in mid-May of 2010, ready for two weeks of adventure across Lowlands and Highlands... with old folks (well, myself and two other girls apart). Which was the best decision I ever made, seeing as tours for older folk are infinitely more relaxed and peaceful than the one "young" tour I experienced the following year. When I go to a foreign country, I generally want to experience the history, the culture and the beauty of the place rather than the parties. Besides that, old people are rather fascinating and colourful. No dull moments, I swear. Included in this video are a shownight at the Thistle Hotel in Edinburgh (too bad the Haggis Ceremony video is corrupt... it was something!), an old man feeding birds near the legendary St. Andrews golf course, a visit at the Culloden battle ground, a visit at the ...

Culloden Battlefield [03:49]
The Battle of Culloden - April 16th 1746 - marked the fall of the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, which sought to restore the Stuart monarchy to the throne. In barely 40 minutes of fighting, the massed army of Bonnie Prince Charlie had been slaughtered by government troops (which also contained Scottish clans) led by the Duke of Cumberland. There was no mercy for the wounded soldiers, many were slaughtered where they had fallen, and those who had managed to flee were hunted down and executed. Bonnie Prince Charlie managed to evade the Government forces, and after five months on the run throughout the Highlands, escaped to Italy via the Isle of Skye, never to return. Between 1500 and 2000 Jacobites were killed or wounded in the battle, while Government losses were lighter with 50 dead and 259 wounded. The aftermath of the battle and subsequent crackdown on Jacobitism was brutal, earning Cumberland the sobriquet "Butcher". The conflict was the last battle fought on British soil. Culloden is near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Music: Capercaillie (Karen Matheson) - Cumha Do Dh`uilleam Siosal, (see translation of lyrics below) The Lone Piper (David Methven) - Glengarry`s Lament "Cumha Do Dh`uilleam Siosal" lyrics translated to English: "Lament for William Chisholm" Oh young Charles Stewart Your cause is the reason of my sorrow You took from me everything I had In the war on your behalf I am not mourning cattle and sheep But my partner Since I am left alone With nothing but ...
