This Scottish castle is the ancestral home of the Clan Murray, and was historically the seat of their chief, the Duke of Atholl. The castle stands in Glen Garry, and commands a strategic position on the main route through the central Scottish Highlands.

Tour Scotland video of photographs of Elcho Castle on visit to Perthshire. This Scottish castle located by the River Tay was built in the latter half of the 16th century for the Wemyss family, whose descendants still own it, although it is now in the care of Historic Scotland.
Balvaird Castle Perthshire Scotland [01:06]

A fine and complete example of a traditional late medieval Scottish tower house, built around the year 1500 for Sir Andrew Murray, a younger son of the family of Murray of Tullibardine. He acquired the lands of Balvaird in Perthshire through marriage to the heiress Margaret Barclay, a member of a wealthy family. It is likely that Balvaird Castle was built on the site of an earlier Barclay family castle. Substantial remnants of earthwork fortifications around the Castle may survive from earlier defences.
