ARRAN COASTAL WAY (part 3) [08:05]
Final part of my Arran Coastal Way for this year [2012] is the continuation of the walk to Blackwaterfoot. Hope to return next year and complete the entire Way including the tidal stretches. Its always precarious stuff camping at the waters edge on Arran but this backpacking expedition went ok as we pitched the tents while watching the sunset across the Kilbrannan Sound on Kintyre. Fantastic - but only an ideal camping spot (just beyond the cave at Imachar ) in certain conditions. Kings Cave and Machrie Moor Stone Circle are just some of the highlights on this part of the Way although in good light the high waterfall on the headland at Imachar must be spectacular as well. The white Dougarie House, set back a little from the Way, also looks impressive before the Way continues over the lorsa Water as the burn makes it way down from the moorland loch. A worthwhile detour can be made to the impressive Machrie Moor Stone Circle. Surreal stuff on a misty morning. The giant Fingal's legend continues in that the Stones on the Moor supported his pot while he boiled it!! Its possible to stop at Machrie Golf Club for a brew while later on a fantastic view of Machrie Bay and the remote and somewhat neglected 721m Beinn Bharrain (Mullach Buidhe) the highest of the hills above Pirnmill on this northwest side of the island, form the view.
