We did the obligatory Loch Ness cruise but no sign of Nessy. The highlight for me of Inverness was a visit to the battlefield of Culloden 5 miles east of Inverness. This is where the differences between the Scots and the English were sorted out by war for the last time in 1746. The history of the relationship between the Scots and the English is a very troubled one which I will try to cover later in the blog The tensions building to the battle had been brewing for a long time. It was the Scottish Stuart King James VI who united the crowns of England and Scotland in 1603. When he died in 1625 his son Charles I succeeded him. You may recall from a previous blog that Oliver Cromwell chopped off Charles I head in 1649 then ruled the country. The Scots responded by crowning Charles son as the new king of Scotland and England. This upset Cromwell no end so he sent his army to Scotland and defeated them in 1651 so that Charles II had to flee to France. Ten years later after Cromwells death ...
