Ayrshire

Ayrshire is a fascinating region with a rich history and numerous tourist attractions. The area’s chief natural feature is the beautiful Firth of Clyde. The main towns in Ayrshire are Ayr, Irvine and Kilmarnock. It was in the 11th Century that Ayrshire came to form part of the Scottish kingdom, thus history buffs will certainly enjoy exploring this fascinating region.

Ayrshire boasts more than 40 castles including Turnberry Castle (13th Century and possible birthplace of Robert the Bruce), Brodick Castle, Auchenharvie Castle, Kelburn Castle, Loudoun Castle, Loch Doon Castle and Dalquharran Castle. There are also a number of mansions in Ayrshire, some of which are now used as galleries, hotels or education centres.

Golfing enthusiasts should definitely visit Ayrshire. The most renowned golf courses are those of Turnberry and Royal Troon, where the Open and Seniors Open are held. Other golf courses in Ayreshire worth mentioning are Old Prestwich, Irvine Golf Club, Western Gailes, Ballochmyle, Rowallan and Largs.

Not to be missed are the three islands of Ayrshire: Arran, Cumbrae and Ailsa Craig. The Isle of Arran attracts many visitors to its scenic shores, while Ailsa Craig is a lovely bird sanctuary and Cumbrae hosts a popular cycle lane.
