'Castle to Scotland' & 'The Citadel Express' 26-05-2012 [03:49]
A glorious day with 100% sunshine all across the Country was in store for passengers on board the 2 steam hauled railtours to run down the WCML on Saturday 26th May 2012. However, the Sunshine came at a price; A harsh North Easterly/Easterly wind gusting up to 30mph at times played havoc with the microphone on the camera, meaning much of the footage was unusable, but some could be salvaged, which is shown here. We begin just south of Grayrigg, where 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' heads up towards the summit at the head of PMR Tours' 'Citadel Express', not as fast as expected due to Network Rail cautioning all steam hauled services due to a fire risk. A couple of hours later, after a failed shot of the Statesman, 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' storms up Shap at Greenholme with day 1 of Vintage Trains' 'Castle to Scotland' running around 25 minutes late and with 47760 on the rear doing most of the work. 2 and a half hours, a failed freight south of Carlisle and some bad decisions by signallers later, 46233 returns running nearly 2 hours behind schedule, seen passing Dillicar Common in the Lune Gorge. Because of the lateness of the train, the final shot at Bee Lane (Preston) was aborted. Thanks to the gentleman in the Lune Gorge for updates on The Citadel Express.

The first clip is 46233 ''Duchess of Sutherland'' on return leg of ''The Citadel Express''passing through Farington..quite late, because of a failed freight south of Carlisle. The second clip, which is disappointing, shows 5043 ''Earl of Mount Edgcumbe'' hauling the ''Castle to Scotland'' charter, on the outward leg , day 1, just south of Preston. This was not where I wanted to be for this one. I had intended to be at a cracking location up near Oxenholme, but the alarm-clock didn't bloody-well go off! Also, apologies for the wobble halfway through the first clip...I nearly fell off the stile I was balancing on...oh, and the horredous noise toward the end of the Castle-clip, is a farmer's tractor in the field below...all in all, not a good day!

Footage of GWR Castle Class 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe on Day 1 of the 3 Day tour of Scotland. The Vintage Trains Limited tour Castle of Scotland can first be seen at Scout Green and then Shap Wells. The Earl was running from Tyseley to Edinburgh via Shap and Beattock Summits but sadly the Earl set fire to the banking at Shap Wells. Hope you enjoy.
