The church was consecrated by the Bishop of St. Andrews in July 1243. It is mentioned in charters of both 1252 and 1262, and so was complete by those dates. Prior to the Reformation, the church was in the ownership of the Bishop of Lindores and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

David, born 25th June 1799, died 12th July 1834, was a Scottish botanist. He was born to John Douglas, a stonemason, and Jean Drummond. He worked as a gardener, and explored the Scottish Highlands, North America, and Hawaii, where he died.
