"Ben Alder rises steeply from Loch Ericht, the Loch of Assemblies, in the heart of the Central Highlands. On its plateau sparkle the clear waters of many a hill burn that has its birth here, and in most places the ground is yellow with the flowers of the marsh marigold. Ben Alder's name is obscure. Blaeu in the seventeenth century wrote of the hill as Bin Aildir". This is Ben Alder and Beinn Bheoil from Culra bothy via the Loch Ericht approach. Two evenings at the bothy enabled long Munro- bagging days on the hill. After walking into the bothy we dumped some gear and headed up to the summits. This entire area is of course associated with the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his assistance from Clan Chief Cluny MacPherson. "For six days in the late summer of 1746 (September 6 to 12) the Prince remained in the Cage with Lochiel, Cluny, and others. Then, hearing of the arrival of the French vessels at Lochnanuagh he immediately set out westwards. As one looks down from the summit of Ben Alder upon the great stones which traditionally are the remains of Cluny's Cage it is possible to visualize the life the Prince led during his six days of hiding here. To the old people this is still Cluny's country . ." The above should not be confused with Cluny's (own) Cave where he hid for 9-years despite Government troops looking for him, before he escaped to France only to die the following year.
