Whisky: A Fine Scottish Treasure
It is no wonder that whisky is amongst Scotland’s finest treasures! For a spirit to be legally called “Scotch Whisky” it must meet certain requirements and distillation standards mandated under Scottish law. Some of these requirements include strict controls over fermentation, labeling, purity (non-adulteration), distillation, and alcohol content. These standards are intended to protect both the nomenclature and integrity of Scotch Whisky, as well as its distillers.
For malt whisky connoisseurs, Scotland has been classified or divided into distinct regions and smaller districts. These regions are generally regarded as Highlands, Speyside, Lowlands and Campbeltown. However, for purposes of assigning geographic territories for Scotch whisky, the Scotch Whisky Association is considering the formal adoption of a new geographical scheme that divides Scotland into distinct whisky Territories- Lowland, Highland, Speyside, Island, Islay, and Campbeltown.
Aside from distilleries, Scotland is home to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society which located in the seaside town of Leith on the outskirts of Edinburgh proper and a stone’s throw from Scottish Parliament. At the Scotch Malt Whisky Society members and their guests can sample the best single cast malts in a private club atmosphere surrounded by unmarked casks of the world’s finest whiskies.
Scotland’s whiskies are not only famous in the United Kingdom, but also world-wide where whisky clubs, bars and societies boast record sales. Members of whisky societies often host regularly scheduled events ranging from taste-testing to private parties where member can enjoy their passion for whisky with like-minded enthusiasts.
