Explore the Natural Beauty of Iochdar
Iochdar village is located on the Isle of South Uist, which is situated in the Western Isles of Scotland. It has many historical sights and interesting locations, in and around the village, but it is largely known as a good fishing destination in Scotland and home to one of Scotland’s largest jewelry manufacturer.
The Iochdar School also has some history connected to it, as the building was constructed in the year 1963. Many pupils from the surrounding areas such as Stilligarry, Howbeg, Lochcarnan and Peninerine attend the school as well as from Torlum, Ardmore and Linique. For visitors that look forward to exploring their destinations on foot, it is advised to inquire about the routes and walks that are already in existence. Most of the walks through the countryside are beautiful and easy to navigate, however, hikers could find themselves in a bit of trouble as the landscape can be somewhat boggy in places and some roads can be dangerous. But hiking through the Iochdar country is worth the effort, as hikers will be completely surrounded by the tranquility of nature and might be lucky enough to see some of the wildlife that roams the region. Nature lovers will also be able to enjoy the beauty of the region at the RSPB Reserve that is located approximately 12 miles outside of Iochdor, in Balranald.
Trout fishing is another activity that attracts many visitors to this secluded destination in Scotland. It is also extremely popular with the locals and with Iochdar being surrounded by so many lochs, it might take a day or two to find the perfect fishing spot. While waiting on the water for that bite, you will be rewarded by the vast variety of bird species that can be seen in the Iochdar area. Many rarely seen species such as the corncrakes, various song-thrushes, golden eagles and sea eagles call this region home. The Kildonan Museum should also not be missed, with stunning exhibits of artifacts that were collected and preserved by Father John Morrison in the 1950’s and 60’s.
Hebridean Jewellery in Iochdar manufactures exquisite pieces of jewelry from both gold and silver and have been decorating and designing the world since 1974. They concentrate mainly on Pictish and Celtic designs, following in the footsteps of the Celtic jewelry pioneers. The pieces vary from earrings, brooches and neck torcs, with many being inset with spectacular gem-stones.
