Loch Lomond in Scotland, Scottish Regions

Lovely Loch Lomond

If you're looking for the perfect holiday destination in Scotland, Loch Lomond is probably it. Though it is the largest fresh water Loch to be found in Britain, it has not been marred and corrupted by this reputation. Instead of too many people and dirty water, you'll find pristine mountains, crisp, clean air and sparkling deep waters.

As you gaze out over the cool, calm waters of the loch you'll likely see a few islands dotting the waters. There is some debate as to how many islands there are because of the varying sizes, but it is generally accepted that there are around 38 islands in Lock Lomond. Most of them are privately owned and a few are inhabited. Inchmurrin is the only island which has a hotel, however, and it is a great place to relax.

Around the lake nature lovers will find that physical characteristics found in both the highlands and lowlands of Scotland are evident here. Bird watchers can feast their eyes on around 200 species of bird and Botanists will not be disappointed either. Inchcailloch, Bucinch and Ceardach islands are all preserved in their natural state by either the Scottish Natural Heritage or the National Trust for Scotland. The public is welcome and access is free. Should you be fortunate enough to take a trip out to these islands, you should exercise caution so as to not disturb the birds which nest here. Dogs are not allowed.

Situated only an hour away from Glasgow, Loch Lomond is the perfect place to unwind. You can fish, sail, play golf or simply spend time at the waters edge relaxing while your worries float away on the water. It doesn't matter if you are touring, vacationing or simply looking for a great place to spend the day - Loch Lomond has something to offer everyone.
