The Remarkable Royal Dornoch Golf Course

A hundred years ago in1906, King Edward VII, on a visit to Sutherland, was impressed enough by the Dornoch Golf Club to award it the title ‘Royal’. The Royal Dornoch has done everything to live up to the high standards expected from Royal Clubs. It proffers a warm welcome to guests, who can even reserve in advance by fax or email.

Dornoch is one of the original places where golf was played in Scotland. This was in 1616 on links on town land along the seashore. The Club was started in 1877 and the Championship Course was designed by the legendary Tom Morris before John Sutherland gave the finishing touches. Located away from urban centers, its tranquil atmosphere encourages you to play your best game.

This Championship Course is rated 5th in the world outside the USA. Golf at Royal Dornoch is fairly informal in attire and attitude, and players can wear smart casuals. The course can be enjoyed by the average player, but will offer challenges to the expert too. Handicap Certificates required for the Championship Course are maximum 24 for men and 39 for ladies.

Not easy to reach, this championship course set amidst wild remote countryside is a five hour drive from Glasgow. Once there you can see why golfers consider it a temple of golf where they have to pay home. The course is mesmerizing and there is little doubt as to why it is among the top ten in Scotland. The setting is breathtakingly beautiful and the course is subtly difficult. Gorse adds to the challenge.

The outward nine slope from the left to the right and head towards the sea. The sandy white beach separates the links from Dornoch Firth. Many of the greens are built on naturally elevated plateaus, making it a challenging approach. Whinnie Brae, the par three sixth hole is the last of the low lying ones. Each hole is different and the course inspires you to play your best game. This pure links teaches the novice a worthwhile lesson for life: stay out of the fairway bunkers and you are on the top!
