Roxburghe Golf Course in Roxburghshire

The Roxburghe Golf Course at Kelso, Roxburghshire is a part of the 50,000 acre estate belonging to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. It is located in the heart of the Scottish Borders. The Duke and Duchess have converted a charming Jacobean mansion into the Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course. It also houses the Golf Clubhouse. The Duke and Duchess live in Floors Castle about three miles from the golf resort on the same estate.

In a magnificent setting encompassing in over 200 acres of parkland it is the region's first championship standard golf course. It is the perfect vacation destination if you are looking for grand surroundings and a true taste of championship golf. The Duke, himself an avid golfer, had the course designed by Ryder Cup Champion Dave Thomas and the 7111 yard course was opened in 1997. An inaugural exhibition match was played between legend Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomorie.

A par 72 course with deep challenging bunkers and large rolling well shaped greens, its wide fairways have been designed to maintain the natural contours of the land. They make full use of the various changes in elevations. It is considered to be among the top ten inland courses in Scotland and is the home of the Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open that is played here every year since 2001.

Strong drives are recommended from its elevated tees onto the wide fairways. The most famous hole here is the 14th hole, the signature "Viaduct" hole which is a par five. The elevated tee has commanding views of the River Teviot and a steep bank that run along the left of the fairway. An imposing old railway viaduct crosses the river in the background.

There are several Par three holes at Roxburghe; three of them are around 190 yards long. The presence of water hazards on two and bunkering on the third add to their challenge. Known for its immaculate greens and picturesque course Roxburghe is a pleasure to play for professional and amateur alike and is a fitting Gateway to Scottish Golf in the Borders. Do visit Floors Castle and the gardens while you are there.
