POET BACKS 'KEEP JOHNNIE WALKER IN KILMARNOCK' CAMPAIGN
Award-winning poet, Rab Wilson, will show his support for the massive campaign to Keep Johnnie Walker in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland by performing a specially-commissioned poem before a huge audience at this weekend's rally.

The ex-miner from New Cumnock, Ayrshire, has written Stridin Forrit! a poem blasting Diageo for their plans to pull out of Kilmarnock and axe 700 jobs at the Hill Street plant, as well as another 200 jobs in Glasgow.

Rab echoes the thoughts of many Scots when he asks:

Wha could withstaun this haimmer blow!?
Nine hunner joabs at Diageo,
This day we're gaithert tae say 'No!'
This isnae fair!
Wha wis it helped yer business grow,
Twa hunner year?

Rab will give his first recital of the poem before an expected audience of 20,000 at the rally in Kay Park, Kilmarnock, on Sunday 26 July.

Scots band Hue and Cry will headline and comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli will host the event.

Confirmed speakers include First Minister, Alex Salmond MSP; Len McLuskey, Assistant General Secretary, Unite; Des Browne MP; Willie Coffey, MSP; John Quigley, Regional Secretary, Unite; Harry Donaldson, GMB; Michael Johnston, Kilmarnock Football Club and Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council.

Note: Born in the Ayrshire village of New Cumnock in 1960, Rab Wilson worked as a miner until the strikes of 1984, before training as a psychiatric nurse and working with the NHS. Rab has been writing poetry for most of his adult life, and comments on Scottish ancient legends, conflicts and contemporary political issues. (the last sentence sounds familiar?)

In 2008, Rab was the winner of Scotland's premier poetry competition, the McCash Scots Poetry Prize (for the second time). His latest book, Life Sentence, is inspired by life: "Fir life is whit we are sentenced to".
