Scotland has more deaths than births

The birth rate in Scotland has continued to grow this year but it is outstripped by the number of deaths, official figures show.

In the first three months of 2007, 14,214 babies were born, an increase of 4.8% on the same period last year. It continues a five-year trend and is the highest first quarter figure since 1997.

However, deaths increased by 6.3% from 14,876 to 15,818, the highest total since 2000, leaving 1604 more deaths than than births.

advertisementLast year births grew by 1.3% while there were 2.3% fewer deaths, 300 fewer deaths than births. In 2005, there were around 1400 more deaths than births.

While the number of deaths from cancer fell by 0.6%, deaths from coronary heart disease increased by 2.4% and from strokes by 1.9% last year, although both were lower than in the same period in 2005.

The Registrar General, Duncan Macniven, gives Scotland an estimated population of 5,116,900.

Mr Macniven said: "The increase in the number of deaths was disappointing, though it was partly a reflection of the unprecedentedly small number of deaths in the first quarter of 2006. The increase was relatively small and it is too early to suggest a change in the trend of a falling death rate."

The figures also showed that the number of marriages dropped by 4.6% from 3493 to 3333, and the number of same-sex civil partnerships also fell, from 284 to 112.

Regionally, Glasgow had the most births, with 1769. Edinburgh finished second with 1210 and North Lanarkshire was third with 1052. Glasgow also had the most deaths, however, with 2065, followed by Edinburgh with 1151.

The highest number of civil partnerships were carried out in Glasgow, with 17 male and 11 female unions taking place. Edinburgh had 15 male and 15 female unions. Aberdeen had six female civil partnerships.

At least we have enough immigrants coming in to make up the numbers.

This is really sad, but how can this picture be changed? Hopefully, we won't let it go this way.

The latest figures show that deaths from breast cancer are currently falling in the UK at a quicker rate than any other European country except Iceland although Scotland lags slightly behind the other UK countries so it isn't all doom and gloom.

The ONLY effective way to increase the Scottish population is to give a significantly large increase in social welfare aid to all families with 3 children as they do in France.

In France, monthly, a family receives about : 120 euros from the state for 1 child; about 250 euros for 2 children and about 550 euros for 3 children.

France currently has an increasing population and is the only one with a significant increase.
