Michael Scot and Thomas The Rhymer were two legendary characters in Scottish history who lived before the wars of Independence. Michael Scot became physician and astrologer to the Roman Emperor FrederickII.He became known as a Magician/Wizard in both Italian and Scottish tradition.
Among his many reported feats include getting the devil to split the Eidon Hills into three, and in the form of a flying horse fly to Rome or Paris.
Thomas The Rhymer was known as a Prophet in the 14th century he was a sort of scottish Nostradamus who made many prophecies about Scotlands fate which unfortunately came true including the death of Scotlands King AlexanderIII which led to the end of hundreds of years of peace with England which led to the invasion of Scotland by Edward of England Hammer of the Scots. Legend says that Thomas The Rhymer still lives inside the fairy hill at Tomnahurich where he sleeps until the time of Scotlands greatest need.
Scotland certainly needs his help now.

Of course, both of them have been claimed by our southern neighbours!

Thomas might have been ealier - this site http://www.rampantscotland.com/famous/blfamrhymer.htm gives his dates as (c1210-c1294).

One thing, Thomas, especially is a subject that touches on folk tale and song too - this is not the busiest of fora, so you might want to visit music and art to discuss the "Thoams the Rhymer" songs, and "Tam Lin" which seems to be a variant. Just a suggestion - entirely up to you.

Which doesn't preclude him being known as a prophet in the 14th Century! After all, you could say Nostradamus and the Brahan Seer were known as prophets in the 20th Century. Had the One Wise Man (Magus, singular of Magi) said Thomas The Rhymer was known as a prophet of the 14th Century I'd have agreed with your correction. It would be a pretty poor prophet who predicted Alexander III's death several decades after the event!

Yours pedantically,
Me.

Heh heh! Well, yes, perhaps foolishly I misinterpreted it. However, Neil is also something of a prophet, as I was *just* heading back to this thread to say to Magus

"oh and there is the Brahan Seer too - I'll try to post about him soon."

I don't think I'd to *dare* to now

So there.

(Heck it is hard to get the proper "sulking in a corner" tone in typing.

Well, Magus, the Brahan Seer story is a cheery wee tale of prophesy and painful death. It strikes me that you might already be familiar with his history, though, but if not, I'll make ritual offerings to my unchancy computer, and hope it wil let me post about him later.

Michael Scott & Ranulf de Soulis

I'm interested in the factional history of the Soulis/Soules/Sules family.
Any information about Ranulf II and Michael learning together in the 13th century?
Both of them came from the same area as did Thomas of Ercleton.

Soulis and the Declaration

I believe that Robert the Bruce used the story of William Soulis's ancestor, Ranulf II, to SULLY William's name in the 14th century. The Soulis family may have been one of the greatest patriotic families Scotland had.

If Ranulf Soulis was in the same league as Michael Scott we need to look into the family a wee bit closer. Guardian and Butler of Scotland were extremely important posts. The Declaration of Arbroath was signed firstly by; the Eight Earls of Scotland, the Steward of Scotland, then the Butler of Scotland, working down the league.

It would be good to get their name cleared before the 700th anniversary. Scotland owes them.
