Question

I need some suggestions from a native or a frequent traveler to this beautiful country. My daughter and I will be in Scotland (early June, 2001) for 5 days/6 nights. We arrive and depart from Glas. and have a car for the entire trip. Please give us some suggestions for our itinerary.
Thanks, Gail

5 days itinerary

Five days is a nice introduction, but you'll really want to come back for more! Drive out of Glasgow along Loch Lomond - take a short snack break at the village of Luss. Start heading east toward Inverness for an overnight - visit Urquart Castle, time permitting. Drive on down to Edinburgh and plan a couple of days there. Then back to Glasgow. I'm not sure you can do this in 5 days.

Another option - Glasgow along Loch Lomond, through Glen Coe to Oban. Overnight here and take a day trip to the Isle of Mull from where you go on to Iona. Then back to Oban and east to Edinburgh.

Or go from Glasgow to Edinburgh for a couple of days, then drive up the east coast to St. Andrews toward Aberdeen, passing some lovely fishing villages, before heading back toward Glasgow. Another option - from Glasgow drive southeast through the Borders - stopping at Jedburgh and Melrose, then to Edinburgh, and back to Glasgow.

Under no circumstances miss Edinburgh!

Check out a good road map, and try to cover a small area so that you don't spend most of your time in the car. On one trip, we concentrated just in the area from Glasgow down the west coast to Ayrshire and stopped in little towns along the way.

There's so much to see in this beautiful country.
