some French people are visiting

Hi peeps,

some French people are visiting Scotland last week in July & first week in August.

Where can they stay as they go about (travel lodge, B & B that sort of thing ) not too expensive - 2 adults + young person ?

Stirling , Edinburgh, Fort william

Any ideas and prices?

Where is a good golf course? Stirling? and is it possible to go on without booking in advance or does one have to book?

Plenty good courses around Edinburgh and district, including public courses. Braids 1 & 2 for instance, Duddingston, Musselburgh Links, Monktonhall - many.

Around Stirling too there are quite a few, though the Yetts o' Muckart near Alloa is a pretty interesting course - first 9 are short holes but plenty of entertaining dips, woods, burns and bogs and natural obstacles etc and back 9 long and will stretch those sinews !

Edinburgh - Maggie MacKenzie's Dovecot House b&b in Corstorphine was used by my friends from the US. Think it was £35 a night (Dovecot House Bed and Breakfast and Mews Apartment) You can jump on any bus heading in to town taking less than 10 mins.

Fort William - Morag Matheson's Thistle Cottage b&b in Torlundy just on the outskirts of the town on the road to Spean Bridge. £25 a night.(Thistle Cottage Bed & Breakfast).

I don't know any in Stirling. I have other b&b favourites around Arisaig, Plockton, Wick, Orkney Isles, Beauly, Fort Augustus.

B & B etc

Those dates are at the height of the season and will be very busy, especially with the UK economic situation.

A wee tip for B & B (lepaidh agus biadh na maidhne) is to drive 9 or 10 miles outside of the town/ village and often find a 'treasure' and meet locals.

Of course if they haven't come by car..........

Isle of Skye Here's a good one I stayed at last week on Skye. Mrs Dorothy MacLeod of the 'Ruisgarry B&B' (£35 single) at Breakish (Lower Breakish) just outside Broadford and away from busy Portree.

Wick If you fancy heading up to the north and the Orkney Isles, then my favourite place to stay in Wick is the 'Impala B&B' run by Alan & Lynne Walker (£27 per night), Check out their website I did for them, index It's about half an hour from Gills Bay ferry terminal for Orkney and nearby Girnigoe Castle (ruin) home of the Sinclair Clan is close by.

Orkney, I always try and get a room at Carolyn Smith's 'Benmora B&B' in Kirkwall. Home. (£35)

North Uist If you fancy heading over to North Uist, then Linda and Sandy MacLeod's wonderful 'Rushlee House B&B' in Lochmaddy is the place to stay. (£45) book months in advance as she very popular.
Visit Uist, Bed & Breakfast accommodation in Lochmaddy North Uist.

If you really want to escape the ratrace then then stay at the Braeswick B&B on Sanday, a wee island at the top part of the Orkneys, its the best on the island!
