That Sinking Feeling

The moment I feared would come sometime this year is very near. I got a call last night. My Dad isn't expected to live out this week, as his health has suddenly deteriorated, so I've booked my flight home tomorrow and will be there at the end. I'll also have to arrange the funeral and other things. I had hoped to come home in April to visit him in reasonable health, but it's not going to be. My mind at this moment is a mix of many practical things to be done there and here while I'm away and also a distant, floating feeling, like it's happening to someone else or I'm a spectator looking through a window.

I've been through it twice before, my mum in Feb 1999 and brother in Feb 2003. Now Dad in Feb 2011. Guess Feb's a bad month for my family. After he goes, I'll be the last of our little family. Luckily I have 2 kids to survive me.

Sorry to hear that coming home this time will be in such sad circumstances, Lachlan.

I'll be thinking of you at this sad time.

Thanks for your comforting words.

I'm afraid my dad couldn't hang on. He died yesterday lunchtime, so the next time I see him will be on Thursday morning, at the undertakers.

I'll be putting an entry in the papers - Musselburgh News and Edinburgh Evening News. I would like to have put an entry in the Campbeltown Courier and the Oban Times too, but I don't think it will be possible.

Thanks for that.

Och well, he's had a good innings and he went in his sleep, probably the best way to go.

He'll be up there right now with my big brother, starting to build another boat and my mum making them a coffee. No doubt he'll also be giving me an earful for skiving off to watch telly and to get off my a*se and lend a hand !

Ah the good old days are back !
