Coming your way in September

Hello. I will be visiting Scotland next September for 2 to 4 weeks. I would like to hike and stay in hostels most of my time. I love the outdoors and nature, but want to meet people and see the historic landmarks as well. I will be traveling alone. While I enjoy doing my own thing it would also be nice to be in areas that are well traveled as well. Because I am on my own I also think the more popular hostels might be better for me than the very out of the way ones. After reading, and reading about the country I am still having a hard time deciding on what to do. Transportation is another thing. Bus, train...I may just get tired of all that hiking and need a break:} I'll be coming from Germany (Florida originally). Any suggestions, books, hostel organizations, tips, hiking partners... This is a trip I have wanted to make for many years.

Thanks,
Phyllis

Phyllis, you could try the Outer Hebrides, there are a string of wee hostels run by the Gatliffe Trust, I've stayed at Renigadale on Harris, Howmore (thatched) in South Uist, (very cheap, and apart from a wee wumman who comes in at night with towels & pillowslips, unsupervised) there are others on Berneray, Barra etc', there are buses & ferries if you get fed up walking. Phenomenal beaches on the Atlantic side. wullie.

Thanks!

Great help Tig & Wullie.
My heart tells me to just come over and wing it, but my head says whoa, better make a plan. They (heart and head) are in constant battle. Will Sept. be so busy that I need to pre-book the hostels? Also, it just dawned on me that the Scottish/American Society here (Dunedin, Fl) would be an excellent place to meet up with Scots and get first hand advice. Thanks again.

They`re allowed as long as they`re not to adverts.
