Isle of Lewis in January!

Hi!

So my friends and I have booked our flights to visit Europe this coming December, and in January we'll be in Scotland! Yay! Anyway, history is my thing so I really want to go over to the Isle of Lewis and see the Callanish Standing Stones. From what I've read, I can get a tour and the ferries also operate, but my question is: does the weather ever get so severe that the ferries won't travel or that I may get stuck over there? Not that being stuck in Stornoway would be that bad lol

So if anyone has any information on this or any other useful tidbits of info regarding winter travel in Scotland, I would greatly greatly appreciate it!!

I lived in Stornoway for about 8 years.

Weatherwise, I'd say January is probably the worst - certainly the most windy, and it's not unheard of for ferries to be significantly delayed, or cancelled. On the other hand, sometimes the weather is perfect in January - cool, crisp and clear. Good luck!

You'll like Calanais. PM me nearer the time if you'd like tips on other places you'd probably like - the archaeology of the Western Isles is a bit of a speciality of mine.

Thanks for that info! I'll take the weather as it comes then! And I'll definitely pm you for more places to visit!

From what I can tell so far, I can get a customised tour while I'm over there. I definitely want to see Luskentyre beach while I'm on Lewis/Harris even if it is winter!!

Thanks again

Be sure to wear something warm under you kilt. At that time of year, the cold winds can blow hard from Dùn Èistean and right up the Butt !

Reading about your proposed trip to Lewis, I wonder if you went and how you got on.

A friend and I visited Lewis in November 2010 whilst staying on Scalpay in Harris. We toured all over and got to Benbecula.

My friend has MacLeod connections with Stornoway/Aird.

I loved Luskentyre - cannot stop thinking of the gorgeous beaches.

I'm probably heading to Stornoway next week.

James.
