Who wants to go to Mallaig next Saturday?
Hello,
next Saturday I'd like to do a day-trip from Glasgow to Mallaig, using the scenic West Coast Train line (http://www.scotrail.co.uk/sites/files/WHL.web.pdf, http://www.scotrail.co.uk/sites/file...guideapr09.pdf). I will take the 8:21 train from Glasgow Queen Street, arrive in Mallaig at 13:35 (hopefully), visit the town for a few hours, and then come back to Glasgow with the last train of the day, the one at 16:05. Anyone wants to join? |

I shouldn't imagine it will be very scenic - all you'll see is snow and I expect the temperatures will be sub zero. Mallaig is a nice place to visit in the summer but it's not somewhere I'd like to visit at this time of year. Also that's ten hours of train travel there and back to spend three hours in Mallaig and that's not my idea of fun.

I went to Oban last Saturday...the weather in Glasgow and in its nearbies was cold and foggy, but after 30-40 minutes of travel, it become quite clear, and snow could be seen only on top of mountains, or at high altitudes...In Oban there was no snow, and only very few ice on the streets and pavements...
Maybe it was because the sea in the West mitigates the climate. But in any case, the snow adds a different dimentions to the landscapes...I think it makes them even wilder. I think one should see them both in Winter and in "snow-free seasons" (Spring/Summer/Fall). |

Don't know what that south shore is like to walk, it would bring you to Sourlies Bothy, not great & a bit ratty unless it's changed.
I have taken the Spanish John to Inverie and walked to Sourlies that way, ended up at the train at Spean Bridge. Rough country, a pub at either end, nothing in between. wullie. |
