Trying to plan a trip to Scotland - need some hints/help
A couple of things; I've never been out of the US (and the Mexican border town for a night of drunken fun with college friends doesn't count) and I love touring on a motorcycle.
With my roots from Scotland, it only seems to stand that I need to save up some $$$, and take a trip to Scotland, rent a motorcycle, and tour around for a few weeks or so. My question is, what would be a good season there to visit where it wouldn't be too cold? I live in west Texas, so, heat's not an issue, but, I just don't think I wanna be riding in snow ![]() I'm also thinking of staying in hotels or bed-n-breakfasts; anything like that in the rural areas of Scotland? Approximate prices of them? Also, any other hints you can give an American wanting to do some traveling around Scotland, send em over! I'll be traveling alone (not married, and my son's mom would probably, and rightfully so, throw a fit if I said I was taking him on vacation out of the country). Thanks again! |

I recommend GLENCOE and all of the Highlands. We have stayed at the An Darag B&B and also at the Clachaig Inn. The Inn is quite a bit more expensive so when I had to get 2 rooms on our last trip we stayed at the B&B mentioned but ate multiple meals at the Clachaig.
I also recommend investigating the ferries that go to the isles. Particularly enjoyed stay on Lewis ! That ferry leaves from Ullapool which is a beautiful town. |

I also recommend visiting local groceries and getting picnic supplies. Last trip we never bought breakfast or lunch. Breakfast included at B&B and picnic for lunch each day. We took a collapsible cooler and a few ziplock bags with us so we were set to get our food.
Also, you may want to look into joining Historic Scotland. Many, MANY of the sites we wanted to see were included in the membership. Their website tells you about the 70+ historic sites that would be free. Most are castles.... |
