Worst Scottish team in Division 1

Apr 1 2011 by David Ogilvie, Stirling Observer Friday

Quote:
Binos hope to beat unwanted record

STIRLING Albion are bidding to end a 19-game winless streak in Division One when they take on Ross County tomorrow (Saturday) to avoid equalling the club’s worst ever league run of 20 matches without success.

That unwanted landmark was set way back in season 1949-50 when the Binos were in the top flight but collapsed after a good start, which included a victory over Celtic, and racked up 20 matches without a win before beating Partick Thistle at Annfield on the final day.

In 1954-55, Albion again finished bottom of Division A, conceding 105 goals and losing 26 of their 30 matches, in a miserable campaign that included a sequence of 19 winless games.

This might sound like a stupid question, but is it due to genuinely talentless players, useless or "headless-chicken" coach, tight-fisted or intrusive board or a combination of all these ? I hope the bad days end for you soon !

In the 1950's/early 1960's, my Dad used to work in the REME workshops in Stirling and he regularly used to pop along to Annfield to see Stirling Albion play.

I seem to recall him reminiscing to me that one of his workmates back then was the step-dad or adopted dad of Billy Bremner and they saw young Billy play at Annfield. Even then my dad said Billy had something special.

PS two of my dad's workmates and best pals at Forth REME back then (and ever since) were Tommy Ford, Jim McLeod's emerging box player and Pipe-Major Jock Kerr of Fillin Pipe Band.

The Binos have had good times too. Though not a supporter (in the 10 years I lived in Stirling, I've think I've only seen them play once - against the Jambos in a cup tie), I can say exactly where I was and what I was doing on the day that this happened:

When Saturday Comes - The Half Decent Football Magazine - Stirling Albion 1984

I was in my house in Bristol, helping to nurse a friend who was visiting us but who took ill when he was over ! Why that has stuck in my mind, I do not know !!

Phew!!! .. I thought Livvy would get the first mention, but I hear that they are steadily working back up the ranks, after dropping out of the Premier League a good few years back.

All the best,
Nessie
