Well, I'll be blowed...

England didn't win after all and it was in the bag... I'm sure they will have already won the next world cup by next month since this one was 'stolen' from them.

Well done Spain but Holland could have won it.

Thank goodness penalties were avoided.

Actually, I'm quite confident Scotland will win the next world cup, it's in the bag.

I can vaguely remember Johan Cruyffs Holland with their total football. The current Holland side are more interested in assaulting the opposition than playing football - some of their tackles were brutal. I only lost a fiver on Holland so I'm not too bothered that they got beat but Robben had a couple of clear chances he should have scored with.

The anti-English racism on this thread is absolutely astounding.

What is even more astounding is that the moderators have done nothing whatsoever about this astonishing bigotry. Put it this way: if an Englishman (or anybody) had set up a similar thread as this but aimed at Scotland and the Scots the moderators would be on him like a pack of wolves. I've seen this happen many times on here.

Unfortunately, anti-English racism seems to be accepted by the moderators on this discussion forum.

On a thread in this sports section titled "TOLERANCE!!!" a moderator called Joachim has written in the first post:

"Please note , that discussions are on topic and free of obscenities and name calling .

It should be pleasant to read the threads in here and everybody should feel welcome.

You can rest assured that i do my best for that."

However, he appears to have done nothing about the disgusting anti-English racism on this thread.

And all this mick taking of the England football team wouldn't be too bad if Scotland had actually qualified for the World Cup. The fact that they haven't done so since 1998 - when they failed to make it past a group containing the might of Norway and Morocco - makes the Scots on here having a laugh at England's expense look rather pathetic, to be honest.

Never a good thing to count your chickens, although what chickens really have to do with this quite escapes me.

The Scots went to the 1978 thinking they'd already won it. They genuinely did.

But what happened? They lost 3-1 against Peru, drew 1-1 with Iran and went out at the Group Stage.

He's probably got a tear in his eye because he hasn't stopped laughing since Scotland failed to qualify for the tournament - again - and then saw Wales wipe the floor with them 4-0 in a friendly.

The embarrassment of knowing that England did not win the World Cup in 1966 would choke any such laughter from those with a conscience.

Tell me about it ! Just before the team got their advanced-winners' bonuses, got their free cars and got their houses carpeted gratis by Carpet Kingdom then did their winners rehearsal in Glasgow, all before taking off for Argentina, I even went and enthusiastically got the Scotland '78 perm ! (as worn by Alan Rough, Graeme Souness and various others. I think Archie Gemmill had half a perm as he was going bald). After our exit at Group Stage, I had to wait months for the bloody thing to grow out and all that time I had to look in the mirror each day as my hair mocked me and made me re-live the memories of Peru and Iran and Ally McLeod with his head in his hands to the tune of Elton John's "What do I have to do to make you love me ?"

A great and funny moment for England and Jimmy Hill ! We deserved the ridicule to be honest and I believe we've collectively never got over it, compounded in recent times by Dirti Berti Vogts !
