Scottish Rugby League Club For National League's 2009
Next year a Glasgow based Rugby League team will participate in UK National League 2. National League 2 is a semi-pro league and just 2 levels below UK Super League.
This will be the first ever semi-pro Rugby league club from Scotland. The club will start in NL2 and will strive to progress all the way through to Super League. To do that they will have to be promoted to National League 1. For a team to apply for a Super League license they must be playing in National League 1 or French Elite 1. This club will no doubt try to follow in the footsteps of Welsh club Celtic Crusaders who last month were granted a Super League license for 2009-2012. Although Celtic did have the major advantage of a financial backer in Leighton Samuels. The Glasgow based club will probably not be as fast as making Super League as Celtic Crusaders who started NL2 in 2006, progressed to NL1 end of last year and will progress to Super League next year. This is but one of a few steps to promote Rugby league in Scotland. 2 others being the movement of Super League's Magic Weekend to Murrayfield next year and ofcourse Scotland's involvment in the Rugby League World Cup later this year in Australia. More information on Scottish Rugby League can be found here on the newly upgraded Scottish League website - Welcome to Scotland Rugby League World Cup information can be found here |

Super league isn't "Brit" nonsense - that is, unless Perpignan has been colonised. (The Catalans are currently 3rd in the Super League and have qualified for the play-offs).

Scotland already has a RL conference. The NL team will take the game to semi-pro level and the best from the conference will probably play for the semi-pro team. Welsh RL has grown tremedously over the last 3 years with Celtic Crusaders fighting their way from NL2 to Super League next year. Unfortunatey I don't think RL is popular enough in Scotland for their own Semi-pro or pro league.
I believe Super League are looking to become a European League of sorts, France will most likely have a 2nd club by 2012, Scotland and Ireland are now being looked at for NL teams. There are also rumours Barcelona FC and Stade Francis are looking at RL teams and Lokomotiv Moscow already have a well-funded team in the Russian RL comp that could well bid for Super League. |
