"Celtic" - the definition

Check out this truthful link
www.clannada.org/definitionceltic.php

"...Unless one defines the term "Celt", the label will have little meaning.

...The only "hard" cultural definition of the term "Celtic" (and again the one Celtic scholars use) is a linguistic one.

...The answer would have to be that they share a cultural heritage we call by that name.

...It also means that some cultural activity in the Celtic countries (for instance, writing by English-language authors with no interest in Celtic-language tradition) has no relation to anything Celtic at all.

...This is in some ways a peculiarly American [and also, a Lowland Scotch] problem: when our families came to this continent as immigrants many of them lost the use of their languages and all direct access to their ancestral cultures, so that genetic lineage has come to be more important than culture itself in defining ethnic identities within what is really one vast Anglo-cultural continuum with regional variations."

This appears to be identical to another of your posts... what point are you trying to make now? That Celtic Football Club should change their name?

Of COURSE he expects that..... Is he not the keeper of all things Gaelic and Celtic? (in his own eyes) - even if he admits he doesn't speak the language at all?!!!

So, what shall we call them, just to suit RainyDay? Suggestions, please

How about The Football Club Formerly Known As Celtic and then later they can replace that with some sort of (non-Celtic) symbol!

Or, if my understanding of the origins of the name Celtic (a nod to the Irish origins of the original players?) is correct then they would have to rename themselves using the ethnic/cultural origins of all the players currently playing for them... maybe on a match to match bases!

How about 'Foreign Guns for Hire FC'? Oh no, couldn't use that, as that name would apply to every SFA and EFA team...

The RainMan certainly doesn't appear to be addressing any question of sport, does he?

Maybe we're all missing the point. Maybe this is about sport... could it be that Raingeanach is trying to tell us in his own way about what players should be playing for Celtic FC! So instead of deciding on a new name for the club we should be emailing them to inform them of what they are doing wrong - that is not taking on Raingeanach as their manager (tho maybe they are put off in the belief, not being Gaelic speakers no doubt, that Raingeanach actually means Rangers man... which of course not being a Gaelic speaker myself I doubt is the case either! What the hell does Raingeanach mean?)
