Hertz and Hibbees
"Most talked about game in Edinburgh in years", "Should be moved to Murrayfield because of the demand", "Hertz and Hibbees are gonna challenge the Old Firm."
Attendance for the semi-final - 43,000.
What does it say about both clubs that they couldn't even fill the national stadium when the Scottish Cup is on offer (barring a major upset by Gretna)? What chance have either club got of challenging Rangers and Celtic on a long-term basis when the support isn't there to match them?
Alex Ferguson realised it was time to leave Aberdeen when they couldn't fill Pittodrie for a European Cup Quarter-Final against IFK Gothenburg. His rationale of a hierarchy of clubs - 'East Stirling will never be as big as St. Mirren who will never be as big as Aberdeen who will never be as big as Man Utd' - remains true to this day.
